Bierkashi Compositing System:
Bierkashi compositing system is a special type of compositing. In this practice, we can use waste products from the kitchen for soil improvement. We may use meat and dairy as waste products for our composite in this process. It is a fermentation process that uses food wastes into useful soil products. For many gardeners, it is their favorite method to enrich the soil with vital soil-building products. This process gives rise to microbes and fungi which are building materials for soil structure. It is a very useful technique for handling small waste in the kitchen.
Bierkashi compositing system is a better system than others. It uses all types of waste (meat, fruits, grains, vegetables, etc.). While other methods use only a limited waste. So the scope of this process is broad as compared to other compositing methods.
This process involves fermentation so it must include microbes. The microbes involved in this system are mostly bacteria and fungi. This system involves three types of microbes.
- Saccharomyces spp. (This is a type of yeast and we use it in the food industry).
- Lactobacillus spp. (These are bacteria that produce lactic acid in many places. The human body also produces lactic acid during anaerobic respiration).
- Rhodopseudomonas spp. (They are photosynthetic bacteria, also known as purple non-sulfur bacteria). Yogurt making as well as hey making also involves these bacterial strains. The release of a foul smell is a usual trait of this process.

Bokashi vs Compost
There are many differences between bokashi and traditional systems.
The most striking difference is either need for oxygen or not. It is noticed that Other methods use those microorganisms which grow in aerobic conditions. While bokashi involves anaerobic microorganisms and doesn’t need oxygen.
There is a difference between the time needed for the two processes. As in normal composite making, we need favorable environmental factors. These factors include high moisture contents, regular flow of air, and temperature. So it is a slow process and normally needs about six months to complete.
While the Bierkashi compositing system involves the addition of microorganisms. So it is a faster method because microorganisms work quickly. This process takes four weeks its complete. Bokashi basket’s smell is totally different from other composites as it doesn’t show any foul smell. It gives a pleasing sour smell.
How to do Bokashi Compositing
The bokashi composting system includes some simple steps which are as under;
- Collection of Material: Bokashi bucket is a special bin for making a good bokashi mixture. This Bucket is sealed and has a drainage system attached to it. Bran is also essential that contains bacteria. Use the bran to make an airtight environment in the bucket.
- Addition of Materials into Bucket: Now add materials to the bucket on the bran. The materials include kitchen scraps like vegetables, meat, eggshells, fruits. Now add another layer of the bran to the materials.
- Liquid Drainage: fermentation gives liquid and this liquid must be drained off from the bucket. We can draw off this surplus liquid through the spigot. This liquid also acts as a pure fertilizer that we can use in many ways.
- Burying of the Matter: After keeping the material in the bucket. After two weeks in the bucket take off the material from the bucket. Now bury it in the garden. It gives a sour smell during transfer, which resembles a pickle smell. Now material will face anaerobic conditions which will help in fermentation.
- Addition to Soil: Remove the composite from the buried place and add it to your garden in different beds. If you spread it uniformly it will give you better results.

Before starting the bokashi process we need materials to start. Firstly we want to waste food fruits, pasta, vegetables, and many others as mentioned earlier. Secondly, we want bran and it is a special type of bran. Thirdly we need microbes in the bran, it gives a distinct look.
After completing the process bokashi bin gives a good sweet, sour, and pickle-like smell. An unpleasant smell is not a good sign. In contrast, a pleasant smell is a sign of a good composite.
Probably the first sign of the successful fermentation process is the release of liquid which we collect through the spigot. This liquid starts releasing in the first week. But its release depends upon the type of food used and time of the year.
Another sign of a good process in the making of the white mold in your bin. It shows that the process is running smoothly and actively.
It is available in the readymade form and we can use it instantly. The cost of bran for a bucket that is full of waste may be around $2 or more. Preparation of bran depends upon the number of your wastes. If you are dealing with huge quantities then you must prepare your own brand.
There are many methods of preparing bran on the internet. But these methods are given for different classes of the bran. These are useful for larger quantities and are not suitable for smaller home wastes. Makers which are dealing with large quantities also grow their own microbes. But this is not suitable for home culture because it is a scientific process.
However, to prepare a bran mixture at home, you can buy EM-1 which is a good microorganism mixture. And then you can further process it step by step. The other parts of the bran mixture are molasses, warm water, and wheat bran. These parts of the bran mixture are added in an arranged manner.
How to use bokashi in the garden:
You can use your Bokashi directly in your garden. The process of using composite in the soil is not complex. It is a simple process that involves digging up the trench and pouring the composite into it. We can also use it by digging the soil at different points and spreading the composite in the soil. This is healthy food for beneficial worms in the soil. They grow ten times faster than normal and excrete nutrient-rich feces.
Composite becomes ready to use in almost four weeks depending upon weather conditions in summer. While in winter it may take longer. After that, you can use it at your desired place.
